House Bill 1137, which will allow community organizations to distribute Naloxone, the antidote for opioid overdoses, passed unanimously out of the House Public Health and Human Services committee on March 5.
Representative Fabian Nelson presented the bill to the committee, and Chairman Sam Creekmore IV summed everything up, saying, “This will save lives.” Families as Allies thanks both of them for advocating for safe treatment and help for people with substance-use disorders. We thank all the committee members for recognizing that we must address this public health crisis.
Too many people have died from preventable opioid overdoses. One life lost is too many.
We appreciate Jason McCarty and Mississippi Harm Reduction Initiative for their leadership on this issue and for sharing this video from Recovery Day at the Capitol. The full Mississippi House must now vote on House Bill 1137 to move it forward. You are welcome to share this video with your state representative if you think House Bill 1137 needs to move forward and become law. If you are unsure who your state representative is, you can find out at Plural Policy’s “Find My Legislator” link.
