Recommended Reading: Surgeon General’s Report “Parents Under Pressure”

We at Families as Allies are pleased to see the recent report by the Surgeon General, “Parents Under Pressure,” which shines a much-needed light on the profound impact parenting can have on adult mental health and well-being.

As an organization dedicated to supporting families, we recognize that, while immensely rewarding, parenting comes with unique stressors. This report underscores how these stressors, from economic strain to social isolation, can significantly affect parents’ mental health. It also points out that when parents are stressed, it can create a ripple effect, impacting their children’s development and well-being, leading to a cycle that can perpetuate stress and mental health challenges across generations.

The Surgeon General highlights that modern parents face numerous challenges, such as balancing work-life responsibilities, navigating the complexities of social media, and dealing with fears surrounding their children’s mental health crises. These stressors are even more pronounced for marginalized families, including single parents, LGBTQ+ families, and those with limited economic resources.

At Families as Allies, we see firsthand how these pressures can overwhelm parents, and we are encouraged by the Surgeon General’s call for comprehensive support, including access to mental health services, community programs, and workplace policies that acknowledge and support the critical role of parenting.

The Surgeon General’s call to action includes:
  • Advocating for better mental health care.
  • Implementing paid family leave.
  • Fostering community initiatives that build social connections and reduce isolation.
We also support the report’s emphasis on encouraging open conversations about the realities of parenting to reduce stigma and promote mental well-being.

We encourage all parents and caregivers, especially those navigating the challenges of raising children with mental health or other health challenges, to read this report and consider how it might apply to your own lives as well as how we can all advocate on behalf of all families.

We hope this report catalyzes much-needed changes to ensure the well-being of all parents and caregivers. Together, we can work towards a future where families and children flourish. Read the full report (PDF download) here.
