Black History Month is so important that it should last all year. We at Families as Allies have been discussing ways to use this month to remind ourselves to continue listening to Black voices and learning from Black experiences throughout the year.
In that spirit, we wanted to lift up this story about superstar Taraji P. Henson, Oscar- and Emmy-nominated actress, producer and musical artist. Henson, who played Katherine G. Johson in “Hidden Figures” and has signed to play Mamie Til-Mobley in the upcoming “Till,” created some Black history of her own with her collaboration with Three 6 Mafia on the title song for the movie “Hustle & Flow.” The group became the first Black hip-hop to win an Oscar for their original song “Hard Out Here for a Pimp.”
On Facebook Watch, Taraji has her own show, “Peace of Mind with Taraji,” where she and co-host Tracie Jade tackle mental health issues via “personal stories of the Black community.” Best of all, they have those conversations with very recognizable Hollywood stars, musicians, and athletes. They all help shine a positive light on complex topics and important topics discussions out into the open.
So, as part of making this discussion continue throughout the year, read the story and consider following Taraji on this crucial journey.
